With constant use, you may experience issues with your hearing aids that will require repairs. There are many common problems that could cause your hearing aids to stop working, which is why it’s important to know how to handle this situation so that you can have your devices repaired and back in your hands.

Don’t panic

Firstly, make sure you’re thinking with a calm mind. It’s very easy to get distressed when your hearing aids fail to work, and you’ll need to relax so that you don’t end up doing something that could further damage your hearing aids or cost you money. It can be frustrating to lose your hearing after regaining it thanks to your hearing aids, but it’s still very important that you relax and remain calm.

Speak to your audiologist

Next, you’ll want to book an appointment with your audiologist. They’ll be able to handle simple repairs, but they can also send your hearing aids off to get repaired by another company or even the manufacturer. When you first attend the appointment, you’ll need to describe the problem in as much detail as you can. Let them know what the issue is, what you’ve done to try and fix it and try to think about what could have caused it.

Depending on how you purchased your hearing aids, you might find that you’ll need to pay for repairs. However, if your insurance or plan covers it, then you’re safe from having to pay for repairs. In some cases, such as if the unit is completely damaged and beyond repair, you’ll often need to purchase a replacement unit to ensure that you can keep actively using your hearing aids.

Consider getting a replacement

If your hearing aids break it’s a good idea to have a replacement on hand that you can use for the time being. When you first get your hearing aids, ask your audiologist if you could also order a set of replacement hearing aids so that you don’t run into this issue in the future. You want to be able to continue your daily life and use your hearing aids all the time, and that’s when having a second pair could come in handy. Or, when you upgrade your hearing aids, keep your old devices stored in the event you need them again.

Consider learning more about your hearing aids

In some cases, a hearing aid doesn’t actually need to be repaired. Instead, all that needs to happen is switching profiles, adjusting settings or retuning your hearing aids. If this is the case, then you can easily get your hearing aids fixed without incurring any major costs.
